Kateryna Zarembo discussed Ukrainian civil society on Ukraine Watch Podcast

Ukraine Watch Podcast hosted by an attorney Danylo Tarleckyi welcomed Kateryna Zarembo to join the discussion whether “ordinary people can defeat a dictator”.

Ukraine’s civil society became a prominent and proactive actor in the political life of the country starting from 2000-s alongside with Orange Revolution, Revolution of Dignity and now – one of the main actors of resistance in the Russian war in Ukraine.

What’s unique about Ukrainian civil society and how it defies the “Western” definitions the academia is used to:

  • 80% of Ukrainians still do not officially belong to any civil organizations opposite to what Western academia defines;
  • Even without direct connections to the network, Ukrainians are more likely to participate in a protest because of the feeling of the community belonging;
  • One of the ways Ukraine’s civil society started is as a way of challenging “soviet values”
